Zing vs CapCut

Pick CapCut if you want a polished, free-to-start video editor on your phone, your computer and the web, with templates, auto captions, AI tools, cloud storage and team plans. Pick Zing if you are comfortable in a terminal or with an AI agent, and you want your own clips cut on your own machine to match a reference video you choose, with an honest report on what matched.

Zing is pre-alpha. It installs from source, and its drafts can fail style checks. CapCut is a mature product with more than a billion Google Play downloads. [4] They solve different problems: CapCut gives you an editor and templates, while Zing studies a video you like and makes drafts in that style.

Pick CapCut if

  • You edit on your phone. CapCut is on iPhone and iPad (iOS 15 or later) and on Android. [3][4]
  • You want a visual editor with effects, color wheels, keyframes and curves. [2]
  • You want ready-made templates to start fast. [1][2]
  • You want captions generated for you: CapCut can "automatically generate captions from video and audio." [2]
  • You want AI video generation. Paid plans include monthly AI credits and Seedance video models. [1]
  • You work across devices or with a team. Paid plans include 1 TB of cloud storage, and Teams plans add a brand kit. [1][2]
  • You want an easy install: a free download for Windows and Mac, or the app stores. [2][3][4]

Pick Zing if

  • You have a video whose style you want, and you want your clips cut to match it instead of a template.
  • You want three drafts in 16:9, 1:1 and 9:16, each with a report on which style checks it passed or failed.
  • You want any video broken down into a one-page style card: cuts and pacing, transitions, captions, color, framing and music, plus the commands to get that look.
  • You want your media to stay on your machine, with no account, no upload and no telemetry.
  • You want Claude, Codex or another agent to run the edit through Zing's 36 MCP tools.
  • You also make memes from your own photos.
  • You are fine with pre-alpha software that you install from source.

Privacy and where your data lives

Zing. Nothing touches the network by default. Studying, rendering and memes run locally, with no account, no Zing API key and no upload. Downloads happen only when you ask for them: a reference video URL (after an explicit consent step), or the pinned speech, OCR, face-detection and font downloads, each pinned by URL and SHA-256, cached locally and reported. Asking for a named meme template may fetch its blank image on a cache miss, unless you pass --offline. ElevenLabs voiceover is used only if you set your own key and choose it; the default voice engine is local. Zing has no telemetry and no analytics. One caution: if you drive Zing from a cloud AI client, that client may send the tool results it receives, and the get_frames tool returns image frames, so use it only with a client that keeps images local. [Z1]

CapCut. CapCut's US privacy policy (last updated April 15, 2026) says the service is "operated by TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC." It may collect the photos, audio and videos you upload, and says it "may collect User Content through pre-uploading at the time of creation, import, or upload, regardless of whether you choose to save or publish that User Content," for example to generate captions. It may also detect "the existence and location of a face" and "the text of the words spoken" in your content, and it says it does "not use any face or body information to identify you." [5] The US Terms of Service (also April 15, 2026) say "We don't own your User Content," and that you grant an "unconditional, non-exclusive, royalty-free, fully transferable, sub-licensable, perpetual and worldwide license" to use it "for the purposes of operating, developing and providing the Services, subject to your Platform settings." [6] The App Store privacy label lists User Content among the data linked to you. [3]

Price

  • Zing: free and MIT-licensed, with no Zing account or API key. Optional ElevenLabs voiceover uses your own ElevenLabs key. [Z1]
  • CapCut: the Free plan covers "the basics": free templates and basic editing tools. Pro costs USD 19.99 a month or USD 179.99 a year. Ultra costs USD 79 a month or USD 900 a year. Teams plans are priced per seat; the 2-seat plan is USD 12.49 per seat per month. Paid plans add AI credits, premium templates and 1 TB of cloud storage. CapCut notes that "Displayed pricing is for reference only," so check the live page before you buy. [1] The mobile apps are free with in-app purchases. [3][4]

Zing's honest limits

  • Pre-alpha. Expect rough edges. Drafts can miss the reference style, and Zing tells you when they do.
  • Install from source. You need Python 3.11 or later, uv, and FFmpeg with libx264 and libass on your PATH. Zing is not on PyPI, so there is no one-line install yet. zing doctor names missing pieces. Speech-based editing downloads a speech model the first time, after you confirm.
  • Terminal first. Zing runs in your terminal or through an agent, not in a drag-and-drop editor. If you want to move clips around a timeline by hand, CapCut is the better tool.
  • Not a phone app. It runs where you can install Python, uv and FFmpeg.
  • No cloud or team features. There is no account, no shared project space and no brand kit.
  • No social platform data. Zing does not connect to social platforms, so it does not work on TikTok or Instagram data.
  • No exact recovery. Zing never claims to recover the original font, LUT or editor preset of a reference video. It measures the style and reports how close a draft gets.
