Zing vs Descript
Pick Descript if you want a polished editor where you edit video by editing text, like a doc, with Studio Sound, filler-word removal, live collaboration and an AI co-editor, on Mac, Windows or the web. Pick Zing if you want your clips cut on your own machine, with nothing uploaded, to match the style of a reference video you choose, run from a terminal or by an AI agent.
Both can be driven by AI agents over MCP. Descript's MCP server is a hosted service tied to your Descript account, while Zing's runs on your machine. [4] Zing is pre-alpha and installs from source. Descript is a mature product that says "more than 6 million creators & teams" use it. [1]
Pick Descript if
- You want to "edit video by editing a doc." [1]
- You make podcasts or talking-head videos and want Studio Sound, filler-word and retake removal, Eye Contact and automatic multicam. [1]
- You work with other people. Every plan, including Free, has commenting and live collaboration; Business adds seats for a team of up to 5, and Enterprise adds SSO and SCIM. [1]
- You need transcription in 25 languages or caption translation in 61. [1]
- You want screen recording built in. [1]
- You want your AI assistant to drive a full editor. Descript's MCP server connects to Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor and more, and there is also an API and a CLI. [4][5][6]
- You want an easy install: a desktop app for Mac and Windows, or the web version. [2][3]
Pick Zing if
- You have a video whose style you want, and you want your clips cut to match it.
- You want three drafts in 16:9, 1:1 and 9:16, each with a report on which style checks it passed or failed.
- You want any video broken down into a one-page style card: cuts and pacing, transitions, captions, color, framing and music, plus the commands to get that look.
- You want your media to stay on your machine, with no account, no upload and no telemetry.
- You want cuts placed on beat drops, music lowered under speech, and a check on whether a track suits your edit.
- You also make memes from your own photos.
- You want a free, open-source tool and are fine with pre-alpha software you install from source.

Privacy and where your data lives
Zing. Nothing touches the network by default. Studying, rendering and memes run locally, with no account, no Zing API key and no upload. Downloads happen only when you ask for them: a reference video URL (after an explicit consent step), or the pinned speech, OCR, face-detection and font downloads, each pinned by URL and SHA-256, cached locally and reported. Asking for a named meme template may fetch its blank image on a cache miss, unless you pass --offline. ElevenLabs voiceover is used only if you set your own key and choose it; the default voice engine is local. Zing has no telemetry and no analytics. One caution: if you drive Zing from a cloud AI client, that client may send the tool results it receives, and the get_frames tool returns image frames, so use it only with a client that keeps images local. [Z1]
Descript. Descript is built around the cloud. Imported files are "uploaded to the cloud," editing copies are made in the cloud and streamed to the app, and Descript "doesn't keep full copies of your original or optimized files on your computer." [7] Edits are saved to the cloud as you make them, and "Descript doesn't support offline editing." [8] Descript says it stores "your audio, video, and transcription data on either Amazon S3 or Google Cloud," encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2 in transit, and that it is SOC 2 Type II compliant. Sharing your transcription data to help improve the service is "disabled by default and can only be enabled by you." Transcription can be handled by Rev, which Descript says deletes the data shortly after, or by Whisper hosted in Descript's own infrastructure. [9] The Descript MCP server is hosted at api.descript.com and works on the Descript Drive you sign in to. [4] You can delete your account and "permanently wipe your data from our servers." [1]

Zing's honest limits
- Pre-alpha. Expect rough edges. Drafts can miss the reference style, and Zing tells you when they do.
- Install from source. You need Python 3.11 or later, uv, and FFmpeg with libx264 and libass on your PATH. Zing is not on PyPI, so there is no one-line install yet.
zing doctornames missing pieces. Speech-based editing downloads a speech model the first time, after you confirm. - Terminal first. Zing runs in your terminal or through an agent, not in a visual editor. If you do not want a command line, Descript's transcript editor is easier to pick up.
- No team features. There is no account, and shared projects, commenting and live collaboration are not among its features.
- Smaller audio toolkit. Zing balances music and dialogue, but Descript offers one-click speech cleanup with Studio Sound and filler-word removal.
- No social platform data. Zing does not connect to social platforms, so it does not work on TikTok or Instagram data.
- No exact recovery. Zing never claims to recover the original font, LUT or editor preset of a reference video. It measures the style and reports how close a draft gets.
